Our background has Chinese influences from Fugien Province and Southern Shaolin, but of Okinawan origins from Naha-te to Goju Ryu,”go” meaning hard a “Ju” meaning soft and “ryu” meaning stream, to the Goju Kai system today, “kai” meaning organisation. The Japanese martial arts have historically been deeply related to Zen Buddhism, their ultimate aim being to bring one to “taste of enlightenment”. To achieve enlightenment there are basically two ways (DO): “Dynamic/Hard or “moving zen” eg. martial art practise and “passive/soft” or “sitting zen” (zazen). Both approach the same goal, but through different ways.

The founder of the system of Karate-do we started with is Soke Bob Jones, he started with Goju Kai’s Tino Ceberano in 1966 and later left after receiving his Shodan Black Belt under Goju Kai in 1970. Bob Jones started his own system in 1970 called Zen Do Kai Karate ( translated as the best of everything in progresion) and our beginning. My family head is Kyoshi Raff Lanciana of the Zen Do Kai Wildcat Division, All Stars is my family schools name and the style of karate-do we teach is of Goju origins & Zendokai, combining both traditional and the freestyle systems together forming a modern and universally structured teaching system called Freestyle Goju Karate Do. The interpretation of our art and of it meaning is (enlightenment through daily practises) based on my teachers teachings – Raff Lanciana. All Stars focuses mainly on open hand and weapons kata and bunkai training practises, with the cultivation of the mind body & spirit connection.

The system is based on teaching the 7 virtues associated with Bushido;

Gi – Rectitude (Right Decisions)
Yu – Courage
Jin – Benevolence
Rei – Respect
Makoto – Honesty (Truth)
Meiyo – Honor
Chugi – Loyalty

Classes consist of kata’s, self defence techniques (bunkai), pressure points (Kyshojitsu), grappling (tuide), ground work, joint locks, throws, dislocations, takedowns, submission holds, chokes and strangles, knife defence, fight training, prevention and awareness, verbal self defence and philosophy. Our classes are designed to give students a goal to work towards and a sence of achievement by preparing students for gradings, if they choose to.

 For your first class you can wear loose comfortable clothing. It is recommended you also bring along a water bottle and towel. After your first class you are asked to purchase a standard karate uniform from our club shop, consisting of a plain white cotton jacket and pants. Most commonly called a karate gi, girls of course are asked to wear a t-shirt or singlet under their jacket.
